Above the sofa, bed, sideboard, or desk: these are key areas for your wall decor. Yet, we often see pictures that are too small, hung too high, off-center… or nothing at all.
At Oleka, we help customers every day who aren't sure "what to put on top." Here's a practical guide to avoiding mistakes and getting these key walls just right.
Mistake #1: A canvas that's too small
A small, out-of-place picture frame hanging above a large sofa makes it feel like something is missing.
Ideally, the fabric should be about two-thirds the width of the piece of furniture.
Otherwise, a pair or a triptych can be used to make better use of the space.
Mistake #2: Hanging it too high
Hanging things at eye level when you're standing is second nature… but most of the time, we're sitting in the living room.
Leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the cabinet and the bottom of the fabric.
The combination of furniture and artwork should be viewed as a single visual unit.

Mistake #3: Ignoring lateral balance
A painting that’s off-center relative to the furniture or a lamp that throws the whole arrangement out of balance creates visual tension.
Center the canvas on the piece of furniture, not necessarily on the wall.
If the furniture is off-center (e.g., a corner sofa), balance it out with a lamp or a second picture frame.

Mistake #4: Not taking the depth of the cabinet into account
The more solid the piece of furniture is, the larger the canvas it can support.
Imposing sideboard → large canvas or triptych
Slim console → more compact fabric or vertical duo

When used effectively, the space above your furniture becomes the focal point of the room. With the right proportions and height, your artwork instantly creates a “professional decor” look.
